debates together and talked about them after every one, romney improved. he definitely improved by the end. we went through more than 20 of them. and by that critical debate he had in, i think it was florida, where he needed to take out gingrich, he got much more aggressive, and he succeeded in helping redefine the republican primary. here's a sample of romney at what many thereafter said was his best performance. >> mr. speaker, i'm not anti-immigrant. my father was born in mexico. my wife's father was born in wales. they came to this country. the idea that i'm anti-immigrant is repulsive. don't use a term like that. megyn: is that the guy we're likely to see show up this week? because that, of course, was with the great debate coach who then got let go by the romney camp. >> we'll see. i still think you don't want to be responding, you want to be laying out your views, and you want to be prosecuting the president. he needs to go in there with the mind of a tough-minded district attorney who's trying to prosecute the guy who he wants to be on trial, not defending himself. megyn: the t

people from romney land that is exactly what mitt romney means to do when he gets on that debate stage in denver, is go off the president not just on what romney says are ineffectual policies like the president's healthcare law and stimulus packages, but the cost of those policies as compared to romney's own perscriptions that call for smaller less expensive government. for the president what he's going to try to do is say look, maybe things aren't so great but it is partly the fault of george w. bush and the republicans who were in office prior to the democrats taking control in 2009, so we need time to fix it, and by the way, the president will also say that he wants to increase taxes on people like mitt romney to help pay down some of that debt. >> reporter: we just put of that graphic there showing the $16 trillion of debt and there are so many digits it almost doesn't fit on the tv screen across the screen there, as you can see. but haven't americans in some way become number to astronomical numbers? how serious is this in. >> they have become number. is it the new normal this mas

first debate between president obama and governor mitt romney. this debate will focus on domestic issues, and it comes as we get a look at a new political ad that points to what the president promised us on jobs and where we ended up four years later. the spot is part of a $16 million ad buy that american crossroads and crossroads gps have planned for the next week. here's a little clip. >> this is what president obama said the jobless rate would be if we passed the stimulus, 5.6%. but this is what the jobless rate actually is, 8.1%. the difference? about 3.7 million jobs. megyn: well, is that message governor romney's best argument tonight as we focus on domestic issues? marc thiessen is a fellow at the american enterprise institute ask a fellow speech writer for president bush, and joe trippi is howard dean's former campaign manager and a fox news contributor. as of late we've been talking a lot about foreign policy in this country in the wake of our ambassador being assassinated along with three others, but now it will steer back to domestic issues and how this evening, and there's a

after what bun dates call serious hits he took last night from governor romney in the big debate. well tomorrow to "america live." back in new york, folks i'm megyn kelly. a look back now in denver, colorado where a fired up barack obama has just finished this rally. he was going off on governor romney in that campaign appearance, and we heard a very different-sounding barack obama at this rally. it comes after the president's top campaign advisers, hour after hour hit the air waves clearly trying to reframe the presidential's debate performs answer. political observers said he looked irritated, annoyed and was unhappy to be on the stage while mitt romney sounded presidential. thousand they try to make the argument that governor romney only won last night because he lied. here is the president moments ago. >> we also had our first debate last night. when i got onto the stage i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. [laughter] >> but it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising

an aggressively dishonest debater to show it. and that is what we got with mitt romney. >> many people are saying that what they saw was that governor romney that they have known all along and has been the problem in the past and they haven't seen that person. that he finally emerged during the debate. >> so you think that he lied through his teeth when he said he was going to cut taxes for wealthy people? >> he is the etch-a-sketch guy who has transformed himself and quite frankly, we always have to wonder which mitt romney is going to show up. if you just lay out lie after lie after lie about your own plan, as well as what the president has been talking about, of course you can look good. megyn: joining me now is chris stirewalt, host of "power play." i wanted to get back to january of 2009 when president obama in a common about immigration. joe wilson, shouted out, you lie on the floor of the house. watch this. >> there there are those that claim that our reform efforts would ensure illegal immigrants. this, too, is very false. the reform -- the reforms i am proposing would n

the tightening? is it the debates. >> the debates and eight began to present mitt romney as a plausible president. and that's something that is very important, very difficult to do, but he was on the stage of the president of the united states, he looked like he was in command, he was in charge of the entire discussion and that stature gain, very important and that's the reason the polls are tightening. megyn: scott were don't the polls always tend to tighten in the last weeks before the election? >> the polls do shift always. but four years ago at this time president obama was up five points and he ended up winning by 7 points. what we also know is that it is more difficult to be the incumbent party from the final weeks of a campaign than it is to be the challenger. megyn: we have been talking for weeks about your dad's trajectory into the white house. he was trailing jimmy carter until the time of their debate prior to election day. that debate in large measure was a game changer for him with the "there you go again" to jimmy carter. and my question for you is did we see ano

debate. you and i talked about the fact that mitt romney took it to the president of the united states and stayed on offense. for two weeks before that mitt romney was on defense from the media and from barack obama. now obama has been on defense for the last week. you see the poll are the showing him going down, not going up. the one who can stay on offense ultimately sometimes will go out and win the battle, win the war. but it's like watching the tennis matches in new york, the u.s. open, back and forth. then november 7, that morning we'll find out who won. megyn: the consternation by some on the left who said this election was gone and it was a foregone conclusion that barack obama was going to win a second term, michael, you can see it in the publications coming out today how forlorn they are about the shift in polling. nobody is saying mitt romney has it sewn but this is a tight race. >> i was walking past a news expand in an airport yesterday and saw the cover of news week magazine. most points on the board. >> you are! >> i -- no, no, governor romney, he's a good debater. i'm just okay. megyn: the crowd wasn't getting what the president was trying to do there. [laughter] >> well, he wasn't exactly closing the deal. he didn't sound like he was too convinced of his just okayness, and certainly there's a playing this part, there's going out and saying, oh, i don't know how well we'll do, but i would say that democrats certainly are expecting that the president will do with mitt romney what, in fact, he did with john mccain which is that as the two of them stand on stage together, the president figures that he's going to look cool, calm and collected and that he can rattle or fluster mitt romney. megyn: well, we saw some moments with mitt romney during the republican primary, and i'm going to jump a little out of order for the control room, but there was one, this one debate in which he actually laid hands on rick perry, and they went back and forth. here's a small clip. >> i don't think i've ever hired an illegal in my life. i'm looking forward to finding your fac
